Re: What Wise Co. Schools Need
The middle class is classified as those who make $75,000 per yer or more.
So in this area how many are middle class.
Doctors, lawyers, and some on the railroad and a few miners, and that is about it.
As far as jobs. Companies simply out source to make money. That is the name of the game isnt' it.
As far as Wise Co. all most have ask for is a real plan. Consolidation or revamping what Basham and Co. let fall down.
So what is the real arguement?
It would seem your arguing politics for what reason.
I didn't get a raise yet fuel prices are what locally.
I still have to pay for groceries which also when up, but did my salary, hmm no.
So what is your point with your consolidation or your point of economics.
The poor are still poor. They are just strugglin more. The middle class are still the middle class just paying a bit more, and the rich are still rich.
So in what world do you live that says. If we consolidate it will solve all our problems?
Shorter bus routes? Few in schools? Hmm. oh well Im yet to understand where you studied economics.
If your busing from 10 miles away. What are you saving today?
We have people who do those figures. We just need a few who do them for the right reasons.
No more Basham's will Wise Co. tolerate. We did enough costly studies. I think if all figured probably close to 1/2 million dollars if not more. Imagine what we could of done with that money. Dr. Basham wasted. Oh and lest not forget the $200,000 we paid to buy out his contract. But oh how he loved and cared about Wise Co. schools.
At the tune of what. $200,000 dollars.

Re: What Wise Co. Schools Need
The problem with your analysis is that you dont offer a solution to our economic quandary. You seem to want our economy to remain static in a world that isnt, and that will only lead the United States into economic stagnation. I suggest that we quit being scared of a little foreign competition, and acknowledge that we have the resources and the ability to excel. We will not have this opportunity in a decade if we try to ignore that the fact that the world is progressing.
Second, education and economic success are not mutually exclusive ideas. We are living in a post industrialized society, and as such, we must find other ways to employ our workforce. The best way to do this is by obtaining a good education. How does one obtain a good education? You attend good schools? In a rural area with limited financial resources, you must consolidate those resources in order to build institutions that provide both a quality education and facilities that can accomodate our students. Wise county schools choose to do neither, because are too busy pandering to a constituency that cares far more about a high school football game than their children's literacy level.
Third, the snide comment is unnecessary. "Hmm. oh well Im yet to understand where you studied economics." If we're going to have a discussion, then let it be an intelligent and thought provoking discussion that pursues a legitimate end.

How is your post intelligent and following any means to an end any more than mine.
And no you and others like to use the sports thing to push your thoughts. Sports is ok it teaches unity and working together, but it is not all education is about.
Honestly i get tired of hearing that. I've known some non-athletes that stayed in school and had no clue of anything besides a book.
They are highly educated and yet can't change a light bulb without directions. Is that education, is that being well rounded.
Seriously.
You have just pointed out problems but not legimate ways to solve them.
Sure we can consolidate. But does that solve our economic problems, if it did everyone in the US would be doing it.
Your words say it post static US. I'd like to know at what point we have not been in an economic stagnation, in the last 5-8 yrs.
Lowest interest rates we have had in how long, but building is down because there is no money in the market.
Foreign competition or foreign domination.
What countries are actually booming economically and why and at the cost of who.
Companies outscource to make what. Money
Think they will not keep doing that and seek cheap labor. Were in sourcing cheap labor now.
Think companies will not keep seeking cheap labor. Look at the labor problem even national company Wal-Mart has ran into for using illegals. Yet their a nation leader.
Problem i see is the US has grown to a point where we have a labor market that needs decent salaries. That my friend is the problem.
Companies don't mind paying as long as it's not alot. Well when your in a society that is use to making money. And i mean real money, hard to start that over.
Go to another country where $1.00 an hr is a fortune to some. Let them come here their rich. If not then why is so many crossing the border from Mexico to work here.
You can be as highly educated as you want. But where will you make your money.
How many foreign doctors do you see around here and well everywhere and why. Money.
They can make more here than in their own countries.
Make any sense.
Consolidation may save money. But it has to be done right also and at a price that can be paid for in a static economy and a poverty laden area.

Re: What Wise Co. Schools Need
My point, and I know folks get tired of hearing it, is that the US taxes the working people to death. Reagan DOUBLED the National Debt in one 5 year span, from 1776 to the last 5 years of his term all put together. And his best work was done after being shot and being under the drugs they gave him to operate on him(he could barely write ). The US is losing jobs simply becuse we can't afford to pay the SS match and welfare and medicare . The GM jobs you mentioned were not only a buy-out of jobs but a partial buy-out of healthcare, to be followed by a complete collapse. If you can go outside the country and escape the taxbase ,why stay here ? And pay twice the amount for "inferior" people? Americans are too likely to think for themselves, no matter what their education. Sorry, I'd love to think ALL our economic problems could be solved by simply raising our education standards, but the bottom line is the 1% of the country that controls 99% of the money likes slave labor better. Re: What Wise Co. Schools Need
I know it takes money to run the schools, and it takes alot to house 800 or so children daily, but why not do like Appalicia did, get the parents involved and the people who need to do community service let them work it off that way by helping put together our schools. I know the community got together and helped the Wise Primary fix a new playground for our children. Why can't the ones who want to save our schools and money get together and have a meeting and see who all is willing to help put our schools back together, if they really want to help they will come and get involved. Like all of Wise County the man hours of volunteering you can get alot done if we all join together. There is enough money in these high business, that can donate their time, supplies, and money if they really wanted too. Each town residents could join together and work on one or two schools at a time. I highly recommend that someone bring that up at the next meeting.

Re: What Wise Co. Schools Need
Thanks for your input, we were against what we saw a a screwing of the taxpayers of Wise County as whole. There are a lot of issues, one was the "tear down the tech school build JJK there and build the tech school somewhere else" . All the kids have needs, and the colleges in the county offer a chance that most counties don't have. Consolidation by itself ain't a cure all, Lee County, where I grew up should be an example for the "poof, I'm an engineer therefore I should have a job group , that this won't fly by itself. Appy needs work , PV needs work, Coeburn needs work, JJK needs work, Pound needs work, St Paul needs work. We will have to do enough to get by , till we can make a workable plan for the future. Communities can do a lot, Appy had a bonded company offer to do all the electrical work, but the Board didn't want to hear that. Kids are a lot alike, they are kids, get them together in smaller groups and they will work out many things by themselves. But if the adults and government don't make a move , there won't be a country left to grow into. Research it for yourself.
